5 Best Android Phones in Malaysia 2022

The smartphone market is becoming more competitive every year. It’s now saturated with devices that can hold a candle to Apple’s top-notch iPhone models, thanks to the wide selection of Android phones. The few notable brands and models include the popular Samsung Galaxy series, Xiaomi, and Vivo, all of which offer good value for money.

Not to be forgotten are the popular camera phones. Many now offer different shooting modes such as ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses to achieve similar results to a DSLR. Then there are budget Android smartphones aimed at casual users or those who don’t want to spend a fortune.

PROS:
  • Great performance and specs
  • Vivid, bright screen
  • Superb cooling system that prevents phone from overheating
CONS:
  • Expensive
  • Phone can be too large and uncomfortable for smaller hands

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G is the newest member of the Galaxy S series and an interesting smartphone. It is the first of the S series to include parts of Samsung’s popular Galaxy Note features. Highlights include a powerful processor, incredible display, and most importantly, a built-in ultra-fast S Pen.

Overview:

On the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G, the Galaxy S Pen has three times the pen latency of its Note series predecessor. Its latency has been reduced to an amazing 2.8 ms, making it the perfect device for digital notes.

Aside from the shiny S Pen feature, this device has a stylish design that is equal parts bold and simplistic, giving it a premium feel. With a dynamic 6.7-inch AMOLED display, an Octa-Core SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, and the latest Android OS, the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G is Samsung’s 2022 phone that you simply must have.

What’s really exciting is the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G’s advanced camera. Equipped with a rear camera with a quad setup of 108MP + 10MP + 10MP + 12MP and a 40MP front camera, you can expect crystal clear photos.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra 5G

See price at:

PROS:
  • Vibrant display
  • Powerful processor for multitasking
  • Great cameras
CONS:
  • Feels heavier than most average smartphones
  • Can get hot after long hours – not the best for gaming
  • Has a slightly-outdated USB 2.0 port

Features:

The Mi 11 Ultra lives up to its name and does not skimp on features. While the phone is rather heavy at 234g, it has an impressive 6.81-inch 120Hz display with a resolution of 1440 x 3200 pixels. The Mi 11 Ultra’s screen also uses AMOLED technology for better display quality and has a maximum brightness of up to 1,700 nits.

Powered by a Snapdragon 888 processor, the phone offers 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage capacity to start, with higher-end models offering a combination of 12 GB and 512 GB. Other highlights include a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass Victus screen, dual wired and wireless charging, and Harman Kardon certified dual stereo speakers.

The biggest selling point, however, is the triple camera with a 50MP main lens, a 48MP ultra-wide angle lens, and a 48MP telephoto lens. The latter has three zoom capabilities, including 5x optical, 10 hybrid, and 120x digital. On the front, you will find a 20MP selfie camera.

Performance:

With the Snapdragon 888 processor, the phone is capable of handling multitasking that includes gaming as well as photo and video editing. However, the phone tends to overheat when you use it for a long period of time, even with a built-in three-phase cooling technology.

The WQHD+ resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate make for a smooth and vibrant display, especially when streaming high-definition videos. The cameras are great too, with the large sensor size (1/1.12″-1/2.0″) providing excellent image quality whether you are shooting in wide-angle or telephoto mode. And they also work quite well in low-light conditions.

The phone’s otherwise large 5,000 mAh battery is more of a mixed bag, as it barely lasts a day. This is especially true when using the power-hungry WQHD+ display with 120 Hz resolution.

PROS:
  • Powerful specs
  • Great display screen quality
  • Well-rounded stereo speakers
  • Top-notch cameras
  • Stand-out main camera quality
  • New feature introduced (microlens camera)
CONS:
  • Very expensive
  • Battery life could be better

If budget is not an issue, here is our pick for an all-rounder Android smartphone from one of Xiaomi’s flagship model lines. And yes, it has fantastic cameras as well.

Vivo V21

See price at:
See price at:

PROS:
  • Beautiful design
  • vivid display
  • performance-driven specs
  • sturdy battery life
CONS:
  • Lacklustre macro camera

Characteristics:

With a large 6.44-inch display AMOLED FHD +, the Vivo V21 is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 800U with 8GB RAM and 128GB ROM, with the latter two features expandable. It features a triple camera setup that includes a 64MP main, 8MP wide-angle and 2MP macro lens, while the front camera setup features a 44MP selfie shooter complete with portrait mode.

Performance:

For a mid-range smartphone, the phone performs well as expected, being able to handle multitasking, from web browsing to social media and gaming. The display looks vibrant and bright, and the 90Hz refresh rate makes for a smooth screen experience.

The 4,000 mAh battery allows for about 9-10 hours of operation. Best of all, it also supports 33W fast charging.

As for the camera, the 64MP main shooter delivers good photo quality, while the addition of OIS helps minimise camera shake and image blur. Both the wide-angle and front-facing cameras are also recommendable. However, the 2 MP macro lens is rather inferior and lacks both detail and colour reproduction in the final results.

Realme Narzo 30A

See price at:
See price at:

PROS:
  • Good for casual and sometimes intensive gaming
  • long-lasting battery life
CONS:
  • Uneven camera performance
  • tend to overheat

Characteristics:

Despite its price, you get a large 6.5-inch mini drop HD + display with thin bezels and a screen-to-body ratio of 88.7%. It features MediaTek’s mid-range Helio G85 chipset with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM.

For camera features, it has two of them on the back including a 13MP main and a secondary portrait lens as well as an 8MP selfie shooter on the front.

Performance:

The device is suitable for casual gaming and the overall processing power is also sufficient for multitasking (e.g. opening multiple browser tabs, switching between different apps).

You can also play some intense games, namely Call of Duty Mobile, but only if you adjust the graphics settings a bit. And if you tend to play for hours, the phone tends to overheat since it does not have a built-in cooling system.

The Realme Narzo 30A is blessed with a whopping 6,000 mAh battery that can last for about a day or even two depending on usage. Camera performance is decent when photos are taken in a bright environment. Unfortunately, the result is not the same in low-light conditions, the pictures look average and show little detail.
